The wine trail showcasing ‘God’s own country’

Yorkshire is not only a rapidly growing wine region, but it now has its very own wine trail encompassing ten of the region’s premier vineyards. It may surprise you to know that beneath those sweeping moorlands, dales and pastures sit a range of soil types which are great for growing a wide variety of grapes. The region already produces 100,000 bottles a year with styles to suit every palate.

So much to discover

The variety of tourism experiences across the region are as rich and diverse as anywhere in the country. Whilst some Yorkshire Wine Trail members are only just opening their doors to the public, others are long-established with onsite accommodation and eateries. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea there are options available on the trail.

The Yorkshire Wine Trail aims to make it easy for people to explore the area, and a passport has been introduced to encourage visits to multiple vineyards. You can collect stamps at each destination which leads to a reward once all ten have been visited ( a similar scheme exists on the East Midlands Wine Trail). All of the members are family-run businesses, some extending to three generations. Their passion and dedication for winemaking, and providing a warm Yorkshire welcome, is clear.

Vineyards great and small

You really are spoilt for choice in this region. Bay Vineyard sits at the end of the coast-to-coast national trail and comes (as the name suggests) with a sea view. In contrast, Leventhorpe, on the outskirts of Leeds, is one of a handful of vineyards in the world to sit within a large City boundary. There’s country splendour in abundance at Carlton Towers, a stately home with walled-garden vineyard. For animal lovers, Laurel Vines offers ‘Herd it on the grapevine’ - a collaboration with the neighbouring farm which combines a vineyard picnic with a highland cow safari.

Holmfirth has self-catering apartments and a restaurant making it an ideal choice for an extended stay in the region. There are also boutique hidden gems open by appointment only including Towthorpe, Knotfield, Helme Edge and Goose Beck (which also offers holiday cottages).

The region is hosting its third Great Yorkshire Wine & Fizz Festival on 27 June 2026 as part of English Wine Week. The venue is Yorkshire Heart – a vineyard, winery and brewery that is no stranger to running successful events. From acoustic nights to the hugely popular Hearty Fest there is always something interesting going on. They elevated their winter offering with a traditional Scandinavian Arctic Cabin for cosy wine tastings accompanied by nibbles cooked on the central BBQ, so it is a full all-year-round destination.

Make your mark on the trail

Can you make it round to all ten members? I’ve only visited three so far but having attended The Great Yorkshire Wine and Fizz Fest since its launch in 2024, I’ve tasted wines from across the region and I’m excited to get out and discover more. It’s time to take a gander around this champion wine region. https://www.yorkshirewinetrail.co.uk
