If you live in or near Birmingham you may be closer to a vineyard than you think! The Midlands has some fantastic vineyards so get ready to tour, taste, eat and enjoy the beauty of the vines – all a short distance from the city.
Heading south from the city into Warwickshire there’s some great options:
Blabers Hall Wine Estate near Coventry offers tours & tastings and a wide range of special events including open days with artisan markets. They also have volunteer days where you can get involved with vineyard tasks and get rewarded with lunch and wine.
The Shiny Vine in Wolvey near Hinckley is an English Wine Shop on a vineyard. It’s open Thursday – Sunday and there’s always wines available to taste. They also run a programme of events.
Welcombe Hills Vineyard in Stratford upon Avon, only opens for tours & tastings on selected dates and there’s just a few spots left this year! If you’re in the centre of Stratford you can buy their wines from Shakespeare’s Distillery.
If you head north from Birmingham into Staffordshire, there’s two destination vineyards where you can book a tour or spontaneously drop past for wine by the glass, food options and more.
Pattingham Vineyard near Wolverhampton opens Wednesday-Saturday. Their contemporary tasting room, SIP, looks out across the vines and serves wine flights, wine by the glass, charcuterie boards as well as coffee and cake. They’ve also started offering some seasonal yoga in the vines.
Halfpenny Green Wine Estate in Bobbington is open every day. Their onsite restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, and there’s a wine loft with a terrace overlooking the vines. There’s also a deli and craft centre with independent retailers, so plenty to do. They welcome caravans / camper vans for those who want to make an overnight stop.
If you don’t mind going slightly further afield there’s plenty more Midlands vineyards to discover too. Search by county in the vineyard finder to find one near you.
And if you really don’t want to leave the City but fancy discovering English Wines you’ll soon be able to visit Midland Press Urban Winery in Digbeth! Get out an enjoy.
